Myers’ Cocktail Infusion: A New Celebrity Fad That has been around for Decades

Intravenous Vitamins for optimal health

Although Dr. Oz presented a discussion about one particular formula of intravenous nutrients, called the Myer’s Cocktail, there is a great degree of individualization in preparing an IV treatment for a particular patient. In my practice, I put together unique formulations of nutrients and vitamins customized for each patient depending on what their unique needs are. What makes this therapy so effective is that as a doctor, I am able to deliver very high levels of natural substances, including amino acids, vitamin C, minerals, anti-oxidants, so that these substances can have maximal effectiveness in healing the body and restoring balance.

One of the criticisms of Intravenous Vitamin Therapies is that we should be able to eat our nutrients. To this criticism, I have the following reply:

The typical diet of the typical American is lacking in adequate nutrient content. Even with a stellar diet, the nutrient quality in the foods has steadily declined. Due to various causes, including chemicals, toxins, stress, allergies, genetics, infections etc etc…. many people suffer from compromised gastrointestinal function. This results in impaired digestion, decreased capacity to break down foods and therefore compromised ability to absorb the vital nutrients needed to just maintain health.

Once we are ill, the human body requires an even higher level of nutrients to repair damage and restore health. When the body is sick, each cell has a higher nutrient requirement. The body utilizes nutrients at a faster rate than can often be absorbed via the gastrointestinal system. This may be the case in an individual with decent GI function, but even more so with those that have any baseline GI compromise.

What ensues is a catch-22. The body needs the nutrients to repair itself, but the body needs to repair itself (GI function) to absorb the nutrients!
When nutrients are given intravenously, the digestive system is bypassed and these much needed nutrients are delivered directly into the cells. Each cell gets to bathe in a nutrient dense solution, which makes these vitamins easily accessible in their most bio-available form, thus allowing the greatest potential for healing and ENERGY. Inside each cell is the energy producing powerhouses, called the mitochondria, which especially benefit from influxes of the vitamins and minerals which are required to produce intracellular energy. This concept of “kick starting” the energy production in the cells is especially valuable in treating patients with fatigue and impaired energy…. Something that most of us can use!

I am very pleased that Dr. Oz brought attention to this wonderful natural therapy. He mentions that so many celebrities are receiving these treatments, people like Madonna, Simon Cowel, Rihanna, etc. However this treatment is available to all people, not just the rich and famous! And while this therapy is a wonderful means of maintaining health, it can be the missing link in treating various diseases that have not responded to other forms of vitamins and natural medicine! It’s a win win!

The Myers’ Cocktail

The Myers’ Cocktail, is an intravenous vitamin nutrient cocktail that was formulated more than 30 years ago for promoting healing and restoring energy and stamina. It is effective at increasing blood levels of nutrients and improves the transport of nutrients from the blood into the cells. Your immune system is enhanced and your energy levels increase immediately after the treatment.

The Myers’ Cocktail  is offered at Pima Neurology as well as Tucson Cosmetics and Glow Medispa. The “cocktail” is indicated for chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, vitamin deficiency, anxiety, stress, depression, migraine or tension headaches, general immune boosting, gut malabsorption, leaky gut and support to cancer patients. It can be useful in situations where oral nutrients or other therapies are not working. When nutrients are given intravenously, your digestive system is bypassed and a much higher level of nutrition can be delivered directly to your cells via the bloodstream.

The nutrients work in your body to help balance and support your system. If you tend to be anxious or overstressed, it can help to calm and relax you. If you tend to have fatigue and feel run down, it can help boost your energy.

The Myers’ has been used to treat fibromyalgia for 20 years. There has been excellent clinical success with the protocol to reduce pain and promote detoxification. Yale researchers recently tested Myers’ Cocktail on a group of patients in a double-bind, placebo controlled randomized trial. The study measured tender points, depression levels and quality of life. Significant improvement was shown in all pertinent outcome measures with the Myers’ group and none with the placebo group.

About the Therapy

Myers’ Cocktail was formulated more than 30 years ago by John Myers, MD, a Baltimore physician. This potent solution contains a specially balanced combination of vitamin and minerals. It is given intravenously to help the treatment of a range of ailments and to increase energy.

The standard Myers’ Cocktail consists of magnesium, calcium, vitamin B-5 (dexpanthenol), vitamin B-6 (pyridoxine), vitamin B-12 (hydroxycobalamin), vitamin B complex, and Vitamin C. Two time Nobel Laureate Dr. Linus Pauling was a staunch supporter of Vitamin C for healing a wide variety of health problems. Vitamin C is an important antioxidant that helps the immune system ward off bacterial and viral infections. It also makes certain metabolic processes work better. Other vitamins or ingredients may be added to the Myers’ Cocktail protocol, depending on the patient’s diagnosis and overall health as well as the condition being treated.

Many people who have benefited from this protocol claim that the intravenous shots of vitamin B12 in Myers’ Cocktail are even more beneficial than Vitamin B-12 intramuscular injections in restoring their energy and stamina. Intravenous treatments are more effective than oral therapy for increasing blood levels of nutrients. According to some experts, intravenous delivery may improve the transport nutrients from the blood into the cells

People who have chronic conditions may need ongoing treatment of several times per week, or periodically every few weeks to regain their energy.

How is the protocol given?

In a 10-15 minute IV push.

Is It Safe?

Myers’ Cocktail is a safe, effective, and minimally invasive therapy that is well tolerated by most people. It carries a low risk of serious adverse side effects. if the protocol is administered quickly there may be a sensation of warmth and flushing. This is due to the rapid rise of magnesium. Some patients may also have the taste of vitamins in their mouth shortly after they are given the infusion.

There have been many published studies done by Alan Gaby, MD and Jonnathan Wright, M.D. on the benefits and therapeutic use of intravenous nutrients. Depending on the recommendations of your healthcare provider the “cocktail” can be administered once a week, once a month or on an as needed basis.

Before your treatment: It is best to prepare for the Myers’ by drinking plenty of water and having food in your stomach before you come in the office. Some patients may experience a general flushing feeling and/or a taste of the vitamins.

Myers’ Cocktails generally are not billable to insurance. If you are interested in learning more or would like to schedule an appointment for a Myers’ Cocktail contact us in Tucson at 520.638.5553 or at the New York office at 516.801.1106

Note: Patients taking digoxin (Lanoxin®) or potassium-depleting drugs should be cautious and should inform the clinic that they are using these medications before beginning the Myers’ Cocktail protocol.

During the 1960s, Dr. John Myers, an internist from Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, concluded that because of our digestive, absorptive, and detoxification systems, only a small fraction of the vitamins and minerals we take (either in food or in pills) were actually being absorbed into our bloodstream. He proposed that a harmless mixture of key nutritional supplements might be given in a single intravenous infusion– literally flooding each cell in the body with nutrition–to perhaps improve their performance.

Each of the vitamins and minerals Dr. Myers selected had actually been available in intravenous form for years, but no one had ever considered combining them into an intravenous “cocktail.”

Dr. Myers experimented on lab animals first, then on himself. And now, more than 40 years later, hundreds of thousands of Myers’ cocktails are administered each year by nutritionally oriented physicians.

Dr. Alan Gaby, the well known physician-teacher to most nutritionally oriented physicians in the country, has written an article on his experience giving 1,500 Myers’ cocktails.

In addition, doctors who practice geriatric nutritional medicine often recommend the Myers’ to many of their patients who are tired or mildly confused. It is well documented that older adults often have undiagnosed but serious nutritional deficiencies based on haphazard eating.

Testimonial from a client:

I had my very first Meyer’s Cocktail Infusion at Tucson Cosmetics. After having a headache for 5 days, fatigue and lack of hydration. Dr. Rubbani recommended I get the infusion to help all my symptoms. One minute after the treatment started my headache was gone immediately. I could not believe all the energy I had once I was finished. This 20 minute out patient visit made me feel so much better instantly! It has been 7 days since my treatment, and I feel amazing.
I highly recommend Dr. Rubbani and this treatment.
